Although solving a Sudoku can be quite difficult, the Sudoku rules are quite simple. p>
A standard Sudoku is a grid of nine by nine boxes, further divided into nine three by three blocks. See the example below:
In the Sudoku puzzle, the numbers from 1 to 9 must be filled in at the following way: p>
- in each horizontal row (here shown in red) each number can only appear one time,
- In each vertical column (shown here in gray) each number can only appear one time as well,
- In each block (here shown in blue) the same rule counts. P>
The name of the puzzle, Sudoku, is a Japanes word. The best translation is: "single numbers".
Contrary to what you might initially expect, solving a Sudoku can be done without mathematical knowledge. Logical insight is important to solve this kind of puzzle. p>
It is also useful to know that a puzzle has only 1 solution. So if all fields are filled and in each row, column and block and the numbers 1 to 9 appear one time at each row, column and block, it is well filled.
